James married Mary Bonsey, a girl from the village of Worplesdon. She was one of the ten children of James Bonsey and his wife Sarah (Howard). The marriage produced five children, shown below.

Sadly, Mary died and was buried in Pirbright on 10 August 1788. James was left with a young family - his youngest child, Sarah, was just one year old - and life would have been a struggle.
In 1795 he married again and, with his second wife, Katharine, had three more children, shown here.
