James married Grace, a girl from Mere in Wiltshire. Bearing in mind how far this is (over 30 miles)
and the lack of any convenient public transport in the eighteenth century, it is most unlikely
that James travelled regularly to Mere. We must assume that, either James met and courted Grace while
staying in Mere, perhaps with relatives, or she was living and working in the Cranborne area, perhaps
in service. I suspect that the latter is more likely. There are a number of candidates for an employer,
including the Somerley Estates at Alderholt and the Manor at Cranborne.
